How to decide when it is not obvious
Three quick questions usually point you in the right direction:
1. Is the symptom tied to one part of the body?
If yes, the matching specialist in the table above is usually the right choice. A long-running skin rash is for a dermatologist, not a general physician.
2. Is it general, or spread across the body?
Fever, tiredness, body ache or an illness you cannot place is best handled first by a general physician, who can run basic checks and refer you onward if needed.
3. Is it sudden and severe?
Sudden, severe or frightening symptoms are not for a booked appointment. Treat them as an emergency and seek immediate care.
"Most people lose weeks because they start at the wrong door. Matching the symptom to the right specialist early is often the difference between catching something in time and catching it too late."
